March6/2014

Ethiopia’s former president, Colonel Mengistu Hailemariam, denied on Thursday any border deal with neighboring Sudan during his presidency.

The former president in his interview with ESAT on Thursday said that Ethiopia didn’t sign any border deal with Sudan let alone with the Derg regime, but also with the earlier two regimes who ruled the country before he came to power.

The late Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi and the current PM, Hailemariam Desalegn, repeatedly claims that the former regimes have signed a border deal with Sudan.
Ethiopia recently signed a deal with Sudan to make a border demarcation based on what it claims to have been reached by the former regimes.

“There was no any border agreement that have been made during the emperor Menelek,or Hailesilassie’s ruling as well as during my presidency. I don’t really understand why the current regime is lying,” said the former president,Mengistu Hailemariam.

Mengistu also asked the current Ethiopian government to make public the “evidence”, which it claims to have been signed by the former regimes.

“The public has the right to ask the regime for such kind of documents. Let the government show this document for its citizen,” added the former president.
It was to be recalled that officials of the two countries have a signed in December 2013 a border demarcation deal.

The agreement, according to media reports from Sudan, is expected to be implemented soon.
Following the border deal, many Ethiopian scholars are expressing their anger over the deal saying that the agreement will give Ethiopia’s land to Sudan.(ESAT
