US slams Ethiopia’s ‘political persecution’ of critics

The United States Thursday slammed “harsh” sentences handed down to an Ethiopian blogger and an opposition leader, voicing concerns about the “politicized prosecution” of government critics.

An Ethiopian court dismissed the appeals of blogger Eskinder Nega and opposition leader Andualem Arage, jailed last year for terror-related offenses.
Eskinder was given an 18-year sentence, while Andualem was jailed for life.
The US was “deeply disappointed” that Ethiopia’s federal supreme court upheld the men’s “conviction and harsh sentencing,” acting deputy State Department spokesman Patrick Ventrell said.
“Today’s decision further reinforces our serious concern about Ethiopia’s politicized prosecution of those critical of the government and ruling party, including under the anti-terrorism proclamation.”
Ventrell stressed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights gives everyone “a right to freedom of opinion and expression, and that this right includes the freedom to hold opinions without interference.”
Upholding such freedoms “is essential if Ethiopia is to realize its stated goal of being a democratic state,” he added.
However, he could not say if the court’s decision would impact a planned trip to Ethiopia by US Secretary of State John Kerry at the end of May.
Although no dates have been announced, Kerry told US lawmakers last month that he planned to attend celebrations to mark the African Union’s 50th anniversary in Addis Ababa.
“We travel, and we continue our relationship with countries… where we have human rights concern,” Ventrell said.

In Eskinder case, politicized verdict undermines Ethiopia (CPJ)

(CPJ) New York, May 2, 2013—In response to today’s ruling by Ethiopia’s Supreme Court touphold an 18-year prison sentence imposed on award-winning journalist Eskinder Nega and reject his appeal, the Committee to Protect Journalists issued the following statement:
“This ruling trivializes the serious crime of terrorism, upholds a politically motivated travesty of justice, and lessens Ethiopia’s international standing,” CPJ Africa Advocacy Coordinator Mohamed Keita said. “As a member of the U.N. Human Rights Council, Ethiopia should comply with its obligations under international law and its own constitution and release Eskinder unconditionally. The persecution of Eskinder and other journalists is the hallmark of a regime fearful of the opinions of its citizens.”
Eskinder has been jailed on trumped-up terrorism charges since September 2011. A U.N. panel determined his imprisonment to be in violation of international law and in reprisal for his “peaceful exercise of the right to freedom of expression.”

Breaking News: TPLF sentenced Eskinder Nega and Andualem Arage

ADDIS ABABA (AFP) — An Ethiopian court on Thursday dismissed the appeal of blogger Eskinder Nega and opposition leader Andualem Arage who were jailed last year for terror-related offences.

“I am very sad, I am very angry, I cannot talk rationally,” Eskinder’s wife Serkalem Fasil told AFP after the decision.
“The sentencing is still correct so there is no reduction,” said Supreme Court judge Dagne Melaku, confirming Eskinder’s jail term of 18 years and Andualem’s life sentence.
One of the charges — serving as a leader of a terrorist organisation — was dropped, but had no affect on sentencing.
After the ruling, Eskinder made an emotional appeal to the court which was crowded with family, friends and diplomats.
“The truth will set us free,” he said. “We want the Ethiopian public to know that the truth will reveal itself, it’s only a matter of time.”
Both men are accused of links to the outlawed opposition group Ginbot 7.
“The walls of justice will be demolished,” Andualem told AFP.
Four other men also jailed for terror-related charges had their appeal quashed.
One other defendant, however, Kinfe Michael, had his sentence reduced from 25 years to 16 years.
Rights groups have called Ethiopia’s anti-terrorism legislation vague and accuse the government of using the law to stifle peaceful dissent.
“I am very sad, I am very angry, I cannot talk rationally,” Eskinder’s wife Serkalem Fasil told AFP after the decision.

Needs of Ethiopia’s Street Children not Met, Aid Group Says

May 1, 2013, ADDIS ABABA (VOA News) — Shelter is among the many things Ethiopia’s street children long for.  But a study by the international aid group Save the Children indicates that local non-governmental organizations and community organizations rarely offer what the street children want.
Azeb Adefrsew, a researcher with Save the Children, said the limited services provided by local NGOs do not match what the kids see as their greatest needs.
“The children say that their major problem was shelter.  But the street children organizations were providing mainly food and other items, clothing and so on,” Adefrsew explained. “But the children were not satisfied with the services they were receiving.”
Save the Children interviewed kids living on the streets in five major cities, three regional towns and eight rural villages across Ethiopia.  The children discussed a wide range of topics, including their needs, health and risks.
There are about 30,000 street children in Ethiopia, with 17,000 in capital city, Addis Ababa, alone. More than half of these kids do not have access to shelter or adequate food.
They mostly survive on what they receive from shining shoes, selling small items to passersby and begging.
There are health risks.  Research data indicate some 30 percent are seriously sick, but most do not have access to any kind of treatment.  And about 40 percent give indications they have been forced to have sex.  Shelter is seen by the kids as way of reducing these kinds of risks.
