US slams Ethiopia's human rights abuse

(OPride) — The United States in a scathing report on Thursday accused Ethiopia of curtailing freedom of expression and association, using politically motivated trials, harassment and intimidation of activists and journalists.

Ethiopia holds estimated 70,000-80,000 persons, including some 2,500 women and nearly 600 children incarcerated with their mothers, in severely overcrowded six federal and 120 regional prisons, the U.S. said in its voluminous 2013 Human Rights Reportreleased by Secretary of State John Kerry. “There also were many unofficial detention centers throughout the country, including in Dedessa, Bir Sheleko, Tolay, Hormat, Blate, Tatek, Jijiga, Holeta, and Senkele,” the report said.
While it said pretrial detention in local police stations were marred with poor hygiene and police abuse, the report also highlighted impunity for security forces who often commit politically-motivated killings against dissidents and opposition party members as “a serious problem.” The Ethiopian government rarely, if ever, took actions “to prosecute or otherwise punish officials who committed abuses other than corruption,” the report added.

ኦጋዴን: የነዳጅ ፍለጋው እና የጸጥታው ሁኔታ

የኦጋዴንን ህዝብ ደግሞ በድህነት እና ጭቆና ስር ያቆየናል ብሏል። ተንታኞች እንደሚሉት ከሆነ ለጊዜው በሚስጢር ቢያዝም፤ በኣሁኑ ጊዜ፤ በኦጋዴን አካባቢ የማይናቅ የነዳጅ ዘይት መጠን ለመገኘቱ በቂ መረጃዎች ኣሉ።

ኢትዮጵያ ለነዳጅ ዘይት ፍለጋ የኦጋዴን በረኃን ማሰስ ከጀመረች ዓስርተ ዓመታት ተቆጥሯል። ኣለ ተብሎ ተስፋ ባያጭርም የለም ተብሎም ግን ተስፋ ኣላስቆረጠም። እናም ፍለጋው በተለይም ኣሁን ያለው የኢትዮጵያ መንግስት ወደ ስልጣን ከመጣ ወዲህ ተጠናክሮ መቀጠሉ ይታወቃል። ሌላው ችግር የክልሉ ምናልባትም ከሶማሊያው ቀውስ ጋርም በተያያዘ በአካባቢው ኣስተማማኝ ሰላም የመታጣቱ ግዳይ ነው። በአካባቢው የተገኘው የተፈጥሮ ጋዝም ሆነ እየተፈለገ ያለው የነዳጅ ዘይት ይላሉ የኣማጺው የኦጋዴን ነጻ ኣውጪ ግንባር « ኦ ኤን ኤል ኤፍ » መስራች አብዱረህማን መሓዲ ኢንተር ፕረስ ሰርቪስ (« አይ ፒ ኤስ ») ለተሰኘው የዜና አገልግሎት ሲናገሩ ኢትዮጵያን ሀብታም ሊያደርጋት ይችላል። ነገር ግን እኛን በድህነት እና በጭቆና ውስጥ ያቆየናል። ለዚህም ነው በአካባቢው የሚካሄደውን የማዕድን ልማት ኣጥብቀን የምንቃወመው ሲሉም ያስረዳሉ። በ 2007 ዓም ለምሳሌ እአኣ ማለት ነው የ « ኦ ኤን ኤል ኤፍ » ሸማቂዎች ዘጠኝ ቻይናውያንን ጨምሮ በመቶዎች የሚቆጠሩ የመንግስት ወታደሮችን ከፈጁ በኃላ የነዳጅ ቁፋሮ ጣቢያውንም ማጋየታቸው የሚታወስ ሲሆን ከዚያ ወዲህ በኦጋዴን የሚሰማሩ የቻይና የነዳጅ ቁፋሮ ባለሙያዎች የኢትዮጵያን ወታደሮች የደንብ ልብስ እየለበሱ ለመሳሰል መገደዳቸው ኣይዘነጋም።

መሬትና ዉሃ ቅርምት በኢትዮጵያ

ኢትዮጵያ ዉስጥ የመሬትና ዉሃ ቅርምት ማኅበረሰቡን እየጎዳ እንደሚገኝ ዓለም ዓቀፉ የመብት ተሟጋች ሂዉማን ራይትስ ዎች አመለከተ። ድርጅቱ ይህን አመልክቶ ባወጣዉ ዘገባ በዚህ ምክንያትም ኢትዮጵያና ኬንያ ዉስጥ 500,000 አርብቶ አደሮች ለችግር መጋለጣቸዉን ገልጿል።

ሂዉማን ራይትስ ዎች፤ ኢትዮጵያ፤ የመሬትና ዉሃ ቅርምት ማኅበረሰቦችን ጎዳ በሚል ዛሬ ባወጣዉ ዘገባ፤ አዳዲስ ከሳተላይት የተገኙ ምስሎች በታችኛዉ ኦሞ ሸለቆ አካባቢ ነባር ማኅበረሰቦች ይጠቀሙበት የነበረዉን መሬት ለስኳር ልማት በስፋት መመንጠሩን ማሳየታቸዉን አመልክቷል። ላለፉት አምስት ወራትም 7,000 የሚሆኑ የቦዲ ጎሳ አባላት ጋ በቂ ምክክር ሳይደረግ ተግባሩ መከናወኑን ዘርዝሯል። የድርጅቱ የአፍሪቃ ጉዳይ ምክትል ዳይሬክተር ሌስሊ ሌፍኮ፤ ድርጅታቸዉ በUNESCO በዓለም ቅርስነት በተመዘገበዉ አካባቢ ለበርካታ ዓመታት የሚከናወነዉን እንደሚከታተል በማመልከት፤

Oromia Region’s President Alemayehu Atomsa resigns

The President of the Oromia Regional State, Alemayehu Atomsa, has resigned. His resignation has been accepted by the Executive Committee of his party, Oromo Peoples’ Democratic Organization (OPDO).

Alemayhu has been battling with severe diseases for the past few years. ESAT Television had reported that close to two million birr has been spent in his treatment from the coffers of the Ethiopian government.

ከአዲስ አበባ ወደ ሮም በጉዞ ላይ የነበረው የኢትዮጵያ አየር መንገድ አይሮፕላን እንደታቀደው ሮም ሳይሆን ዛሬ ጠዋት በስዊዘርላንድ የጄኔቫ የአየር ማረፊያ ለማረፍ መገደዱን ነው የሲውዘርላንድ ፖሊስ የገለፀው። የአይሮፕላን ማረፊያ ቃል አቀባይ ቤርትሮ እሽቴምፍሊ ለዶይቸ ቬለ እንደገለፁት፤ « ረዳት አብራሪው ራሱ ከበረራ ክፍል በገመድ ነው የወረደው፤ ኃላም አብራሪው እና የአይሮፕላኑ ጠላፊ እሱ ራሱ እንደሆነ ነው የተናገረው። በ1983 የተወለደ ኢትዮጵያዊ እንደሆነ ነው የምናውቀው። በአሁኑ ሰዓት በፖሊስ ቁጥጥር ስር ይገኛል። ቃሉን እየሰጠ ነው። በሚቀጥሉት ሰዓታት አብራሪውን ለዚህ ድርጊት የገፋፋው ምን እንደሆነ እናውቃለን ብለን እናምናለን። »

Ethiopia uses Italian surveillance to hack their own journalists in US and Europe – report

February 14, 2014 (Voice of Russia) — The Ethiopian government used a new Italian surveillance program to hack into computers of their own journalists located in the US and Europe. A new report by Citizen Lab have confirmed the speculations regarding the Ethiopian government hacking into the computers of Ethiopian journalists in the US and Europe.

According to the report, all journalists belonged to the Ethiopian Satellite Television (ESAT).

ESAT is a news organization, which consists of mainly Ethiopian expats. In order to get access to their files the authorities used a program, developed in Italy, by Italian company Hacking Team.

This update is just another example of various government organizations around the world using local surveillance companies for espionage.

According to Morgan Marquis-Boire, a security researcher: “This stuff is sold widely, and as such it is also used widely. This type of targeted surveillance is a common method for tracking journalist in the in the diaspora.”

Marquis-Boire, who worked on the project with his colleagues from Citizen Lab, Bill Marczak, Claudio Guarnieri and John Scott-Railton, found proof of tracking two ESAT employees: one located in Brussels and one who is in northern Virginia.

Bekele Nadhi, a pioneer Oromo leader and activist, dies at 80

(OPride) – Bekele Nadhi, a prominent lawyer and fierce Oromo rights activist, who was among the pioneer founders of the Macha Tulama Association (MTA) passed away at his home in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on Tuesday from heart complications. He was 80.

Over the last 50 years, since the founding of the MTA until his death, Bekele served in various leadership capacities, including as a president, vice president, honorary president and most recently legal advisor, according to statements from the organization.

The MTA was formed in 1964 as a grassroots-based pan-Oromo organization to promote socio-economic development across Oromia, the Oromo country, and to emancipate the Oromo from cultural marginalization, political oppression, and economic exploitation. The Oromo are Ethiopia's single largest ethno-national group.

Ethiopia Confirmed the Abduction of the two-Key ONLF negotiators

February 1, 2014 (CNN iReport) — Five days later after the Kenyan Police says that it was investigating the Ethiopian Security agent’s abduction of two-key Ogaden National Liberation Front’s negotiators,who were abducted from outside a popular restaurant in Upper Hill, Nairobi,reliable sources confirmed that those involved in facilitating with the mission are at Kenyan Police’s hand but Ethiopian masterminders confirmed that Mr, Sulub Abdi Ahmed and Ali Ahmed Hussein are at their hands.

Speaking with Harun Maruf’s VOA Somali service, Ethiopian regional adviser,Abdinur confirmed that the two-key negotiators are at their hands but failed to identify the exact place they are being held and when they as usual by gunpoint be forced to speak without their consent to the media, however, it is obvious now that the action was intended to jeopardize the international backed peace-talks between the government and ONLF.

It’s likely to be that the Ogaden puppet administration of Abdi iley and Ethiopian generals stationed at Ogaden are behind this critical and unethical incident that violated the essential international norm and violated the Kenyan sovereignty.
